Raireshwar is a popular hill fort and plateau in the Bhor taluka of the Pune district, Maharashtra. It is a one-day trek, known for its historical significance, scenic beauty, and vibrant wildflower blooms, especially during the monsoon and post-monsoon seasons.

Historical Significance

Raireshwar holds a special place in Maratha history. It is believed that at the age of 16, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj took the oath of ‘Swarajya’ (self-rule) at the ancient Raireshwar Temple, dedicating his life to establishing the Maratha Empire. The temple, a key attraction on the plateau, is a testament to this historical event.

Trek Details

  • Difficulty: The trek is generally considered easy to moderate, making it suitable for beginners and families.

  • Duration: The trek to the plateau and back can be completed in a few hours. Many trekking groups combine the Raireshwar trek with a visit to the nearby Kenjalgad Fort, which makes for a longer, full-day adventure.

  • Route: The trek starts from the base village of Korle. The path includes a mix of rocky terrain and well-marked steps. There are also iron ladders, often referred to as the “Ladder of Heaven,” which make the final ascent to the plateau easier.

What to See

  • Raireshwar Temple: The ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, where the historic oath of Swarajya was taken.

  • Wildflower Plateau: During the monsoon and post-monsoon seasons, the entire plateau transforms into a stunning carpet of diverse wildflowers, similar to the famous Kaas Plateau.

  • Geological Marvel: Raireshwar is known for its “seven-colored soil,” a geological feature that has fascinated many.

  • Panoramic Views: From the top, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding Sahyadri ranges, including forts like Kenjalgad, Rohida, and Kamalgad, as well as the Neera and Walki river basins.

  • Gomukh Lake and Pandav Leni: Other points of interest on the plateau include these lakes and caves.

Best Time to Visit

The best time for the Raireshwar trek is from June to February.

  • Monsoon (June to September): This is the most popular time as the landscape is lush and green, and waterfalls are in full flow. The plateau is also covered in misty fog, creating a magical atmosphere.

  • Post-Monsoon (October to February): This period is ideal for witnessing the magnificent wildflower blooms and enjoying pleasant, cool weather perfect for hiking and sightseeing.

How to Reach

Raireshwar is easily accessible from both Pune and Mumbai.

  • From Pune: The base village of Korle is about 82 km away. The route via Bhor is shorter but has narrow roads, especially for larger vehicles. The route via Wai is longer but is often recommended for those traveling in buses or other large vehicles.

  • From Mumbai: The distance is approximately 227 km. Many trekking organizations offer bus pick-ups from Mumbai, making it a convenient one-day trip.

To reach the base village of Korigad (which seems to be a confusion with Korle), take a train from Pune to Lonavala, then hire a local taxi or bus to Peth Shahpur village, the starting point for the Korigad fort trek. Driving from Pune directly to the base village is also an option.

Lonavala to Peth Shahpur: From Lonavala station, hire a local taxi or take a bus to Peth Shahpur village. This journey takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.
