resorts near naneghat jivdhan

The Naneghat and Jivdhan trek is a popular and historically significant trek in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra, offering a mix of natural beauty, adventure, and history. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you plan your trek.

Trek Overview

• Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult. While Naneghat itself is considered easy-to-moderate, the Jivdhan fort section is more challenging and technical, with rock patches that may require ropes and a good level of fitness.

• Duration: A combined Naneghat and Jivdhan trek can take a full day (around 7-8 hours). Many trekkers opt for an overnight trip to cover both.

• Distance: Approximately 7-10 km, depending on the route.

• Highlights:

  • Naneghat Pass: An ancient trade route dating back to the Satavahana dynasty, known for its reverse waterfall phenomenon during the monsoon.

  • Jivdhan Fort: A hill fort with historical significance, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, including Harishchandragad, Nimgiri, and Chavand forts.

  • Vanarlingi Pinnacle: A massive rock pinnacle near Jivdhan fort, popular for rock climbing and rappelling.

  • Monsoon Beauty: Lush green landscapes, cascading waterfalls, and misty weather make this trek particularly appealing during the rainy season.

Trek Routes

There are two main routes for the Jivdhan trek:

1. From Ghatghar Village (Junnar Darwaja): This is generally considered the easier route. It’s a 5-6 km trek that takes about 1.5-2 hours one way. It has some rocky patches and steps but is less technical than the Naneghat route.

2. From Naneghat Pass (Kalyan Darwaja): This is the more challenging and traditional route, often done as a combined trek. From the Naneghat plateau, you walk towards the fort. The ascent to the fort’s main entrance involves navigating difficult rock patches and rock-cut steps, which were partially destroyed by the British. This route is recommended for experienced trekkers or those with a guide.

Best Time to Visit

• Monsoon (June to September): This is the most popular time to visit. The entire landscape turns a vibrant green, and the reverse waterfall at Naneghat is a major attraction. The trek can be slippery and more difficult due to rain, so proper trekking gear is essential.

• Post-Monsoon and Winter (October to February): This is also an excellent time to visit. The weather is pleasant, and the views are clear. The trails are less slippery, making the technical sections safer to navigate.

How to Get There

The base villages for the trek are typically accessible from both Mumbai and Pune.

• From Mumbai:

  • Take a train to Kalyan. From Kalyan, you can find a bus or shared taxi to Vaishakhare or Ghatghar village.

  • Many trekking groups offer private bus transportation from various pickup points in Mumbai.

• From Pune:

  • Take a bus to Junnar. From Junnar, you can get a local bus or private vehicle to Ghatghar village.

  • Similar to Mumbai, trekking groups organize full-day or overnight trips with transportation from Pune.

Things to See and Do

• Jivdhan Fort: Explore the remnants of the fort, including the rock-cut steps, gates, and water cisterns. The views from the top are spectacular.

• Naneghat Pass: Witness the famous reverse waterfall, explore the ancient caves, and see the historical inscriptions.

• Camping: Many trekkers camp at the top of Naneghat or near the base villages.

• Photography: The panoramic views and natural beauty, especially during the monsoon, offer great opportunities for photography.

Important Tips

• Go with a Guide or Group: Especially if you are a beginner or during the monsoon, it’s highly recommended to go with an experienced trekking group. The trails can be confusing, and the technical sections of the Jivdhan fort can be dangerous without proper guidance and safety equipment.

• Wear Appropriate Gear: Use proper trekking shoes with a good grip, and wear full-sleeve shirts and pants to protect against insects and thorny bushes.

• Carry Essentials: Always carry at least 2-3 liters of water, some snacks, a first-aid kit, a headlamp/torch, and a raincoat (for monsoon treks).

• Check the Weather: The weather in the Western Ghats can change rapidly, especially during the monsoon. Check the forecast before you go.

• Respect the Environment: Do not litter. Carry all your trash back with you to help preserve the natural beauty of the area.
