Kothaligad, also known as Peth Fort, is a popular trekking destination near Karjat, Maharashtra, known for its unique rock-cut steps and stunning views. Here’s a guide to the trek:

Trek Difficulty and Duration

  • Difficulty: Kothaligad is generally considered an easy to moderate trek, making it suitable for beginners and families.
  • Duration: The entire trek, including exploring the fort, typically takes 4 to 5 hours. The core climb from the base village to the summit takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.
  • Trek Route: The trek starts from Ambivli village. The first part is a gradual ascent to Peth village, and from there, the climb becomes steeper as you head towards the fort. The highlight is a set of spiral stairs carved into the rock, leading to the top.

How to Get There

Best Time to Visit

  • Monsoon (June to September): This is the most popular time to visit. The surrounding landscape is lush green with numerous waterfalls, creating a picturesque and misty environment. However, the trail can be slippery, and the rock-cut steps require extra caution.
  • Winter (November to February): This is also an excellent time for the trek. The weather is cool and pleasant, offering clear views of the surrounding forts like Bhimashankar, Malanggad, and Matheran.
  • Avoid Summer (March to May): The heat can make the trek exhausting.

What to See and Do

  • Peth Village: This is the base village where you’ll find small shops and eateries serving local food and snacks.
  • Caves: There are several caves on the fort, including the spacious Bhairoba cave, which can accommodate many people.
  • Water Cisterns and Potholes: You’ll find ancient water tanks and other historical ruins.
  • The Rock-Cut Steps: The main attraction of the trek is the unique spiral staircase carved from the inside of the pinnacle, which leads to the summit.
  • Panoramic Views: The fort’s summit offers a 360-degree view of the surrounding hills and valleys, making it a great spot for photography.
