  • Height: Kalu Waterfall is one of the highest waterfalls in the Malshej Ghat region, with a height of about 1,200 feet (approximately 3,973 meters).
  • Origin: The waterfall originates from the Harishchandragad mountains and is fed by the Kalu River. It cascades down in five stages, though trekkers typically view the first and last stages.
  • Location: The waterfall is situated near the villages of Savarne and Thitbi, close to Khireshwar village, which is a common base point for many treks in the region, including Harishchandragad.

Trekking and Difficulty
The trek to Kalu Waterfall is generally considered to be of moderate difficulty. It is suitable for beginners with a reasonable level of fitness, but it’s more challenging during the monsoon season. There are a couple of main routes to the waterfall:

  • God’s Valley Trek: This is the more popular and adventurous route. It starts from Thitbi village and involves a trek through dense jungles, multiple stream crossings, and walking along the river. The trail can be slippery and challenging, especially during heavy rains. Some sections might require a zipline or rope for crossing, which is often managed by local guides or trekking groups.
  • Top Viewpoint from Khireshwar: For a less strenuous experience, you can hike to a viewpoint near Khireshwar village. This is a relatively flat walk and takes about 60-90 minutes, making it suitable for beginners and those who just want a glimpse of the waterfall from a distance.

Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Kalu Waterfall is during the monsoon season (June to September). This is when the waterfall is in its full glory, and the surrounding landscape is lush green and misty, offering breathtaking views. However, be aware of the following:

  • During heavy rainfall, the trails can become extremely slippery and dangerous.
  • The water level in the streams and rivers can rise quickly, making crossings risky.
  • Visibility can be poor due to mist and fog.

The post-monsoon season (October to November) is also a good time to visit. The waterfall will have a moderate flow, and the weather will be pleasant, making the trek more comfortable and safer.
Safety Tips

  • Hire a Guide: It is highly recommended to hire a local guide, especially if you are not an experienced trekker or are attempting the trek during the monsoon. They are familiar with the terrain and can ensure your safety.
  • Go with a Group: Trekking with an organized trekking group is a safe and reliable option. They provide a trek leader, first-aid, and all necessary arrangements.
  • Proper Footwear: Wear sturdy trekking shoes with a good grip to avoid slipping on the wet and rocky terrain.
  • Carry Essentials: Bring at least 2 liters of water, energy snacks, a first-aid kit, a raincoat or poncho, and a waterproof bag to protect your belongings.
  • Avoid Swimming: The currents in the waterfall pool can be strong and unpredictable, especially during the monsoon. It is not safe to swim.
  • Check Weather: Always check the weather forecast before planning your trip. Avoid trekking during periods of extremely heavy rainfall.

Route to Thitabi Village (Base Village):
  1. 1. Travel to Sawarne:

From Mumbai, take a bus from Kalyan or from Pune, take a bus via Alephata. Get off at Sawarne village.

  • 2. Proceed to Thitabi:

From Sawarne, walk for approximately 2 kilometers to reach Thitabi Village.

  • 3. Start the Trek:

From Thitabi, the trek is about 5-6 km and involves river crossings, making it suitable for a full waterfall base trek.

Why Thitabi is for the Base Trek:

  • Base Access: Thitabi is explicitly identified as the route for the full waterfall base trek, including the more adventurous God Valley path.
  • Challenges: This route includes river crossings and is considered moderate difficulty.
Why Sawarne is not for the Base Trek:
  • Stopping Point: Sawarne serves as an intermediate point for reaching the base villages.
  • Viewpoint Route: The quicker, easy-to-moderate route for a viewpoint hike starts from Khireshwar, not Thitabi or Sawarne.
