Lost In Trekking
Sept 1, 2007: Ajay Tanaji Kolhe from Thane came to Khandala for trekking with eight friends. The trek started in the Ulhas valley, around 55 km from Lonavala. While crossing a nullah, Kolhe lost his way and went into missing. Fellow trekkers filed complaints with the police.After 32 days without food and potable water, Kolhe found his way back home.
Jun 15, 2008: A 16-member group of the citybased trekkers descended the Nagphani valley in Lonavala-Khandala region to experience the monsoon magic.As they negotiated their way down the valley alongside a water fall, they realised that rain and fog had reduced visibility in the valley.The lost their sense of direction and contacted relatives, who contacted the Lonavala police.The police sent a team with the guide and rescued the trekkers.
Feb 2009: Two software engineers, Shaurya Vardhan Garg and Sagar Munjal Sanghvi, lost their lives during their trek to Torna fort, which is about 45 kms from the city. Members of Giridarshan club were roped in for the search operation at the base of the fort.They found the bodies after two days of search.The bodies were recovered from a gorge, at a depth of about 1,100 feet from the Zunzar machi area of the Torna fort.

So far, Professor Sachin Joshi has mapped 58 of the roughly 350 forts in the state with the help of GPS. These are lesser-known forts, which makes the mapping of the others all the more important. The forts mapped so far include Manikgad, Vishramgad, Mangad, Chandragad, Alibagug, Khanderi-Underi and Revadanda.
