The Gorakhgad trek is a popular and challenging one-day trek located in the Sahyadri Mountain Range, near the town of Murbad in the Thane district of Maharashtra. It is a favorite among trekkers for its scenic beauty, dense forests, and a thrilling final climb.
Trek Difficulty
The trek is generally considered moderate to difficult. While the initial part is a relatively easy walk through forests, the final ascent is a near-vertical rock face with steps carved into it. This final section requires some rock climbing skills and is not for the faint-hearted. It can be particularly challenging and dangerous during the monsoon season due to slippery rocks.

- Base Village: Dehri, which is about 100-120 km from Mumbai.
- Trek Duration: Approximately 4-5 hours round trip, including breaks. It takes about 2-3 hours to reach the summit.
- Altitude: 2,137 feet (650 meters).
- Best Time to Visit: The post-monsoon and winter months (October to February) are ideal. The weather is pleasant, and the skies are clear, offering panoramic views. While the monsoon season (June to September) is known for lush greenery and waterfalls, the final climb becomes very risky and is often advised against for less experienced trekkers.
The Trekking Route
The trek is divided into a few key sections:
- Dehari to Forest Base: The trek begins from behind the Gorakshnath Temple in Dehari village. This initial section is a pleasant 45-60 minute walk through thick forests.
- Forest Base to Rock Caves: This is where the climb begins. You will encounter a rock patch that has hooks to assist trekkers. After this, you will reach a small plateau with rock-cut caves and water cisterns. It’s a great spot to take a short break.
- Caves to Summit: The most thrilling part of the trek. It involves a steep, exposed climb on narrow ledges and vertical stairs carved into the rock. This final section requires extreme caution. At the top, you’ll find a small temple and breathtaking 360-degree views of the surrounding Sahyadri mountain range.
How to Reach Gorakhgad from Mumbai
- By Private Vehicle: You can drive directly to the base village of Dehari. The journey takes approximately 3 hours. There is parking available near the Gorakshnath Temple.
- By Public Transport:
- Take a local train to Kalyan railway station.
- From Kalyan, take a bus to Murbad.
- From Murbad, take another bus or a shared rickshaw to Dehari village. The journey from Kalyan to the base village can take around 1.5 hours.
Important Tips
- Carry at least 2-3 liters of water per person, especially during the non-monsoon months.
- Wear good quality trekking shoes with a strong grip, as the trail can be slippery and rocky.
- Carry a headlamp or torch if you are planning a night trek or starting early in the morning.
- It is highly recommended to trek with an experienced guide or as part of a group, especially if you are not an expert trekker.
To reach Gorakhgad from Mumbai, take a local train on the Central Line to Kalyan or Badlapur, then catch a State Transport (ST) bus or taxi to the base village of Dehri. Alternatively, you can drive directly from Mumbai via NH 61 (Mumbai-Nashik Highway) to Murbad and then on to Dehri, a journey of about 90-97 km taking roughly 2.5 to 3 hours
- Mumbai to Kalyan by Local Train: Take a local train on the Central Line from your location in Mumbai (like CSMT or Dadar) to Kalyan Junction.
- Kalyan to Murbad by Bus: From the Kalyan railway station, you can go to the Kalyan State Transport (ST) Bus Depot. From there, board an ST bus to Murbad. This journey typically takes about an hour.
- Murbad to Dehri by Bus or Taxi: From the Murbad Bus Depot, you’ll need to take another bus, taxi, or a shared auto-rickshaw to Dehri village. The road from Murbad to Dehri is often described as rough, so be prepared for a bumpy ride.

Mumbai to Gorakhgad journey
From Dadar railway station I took the first Kasara train at 4:30 in the morning and went to Kalyan. From Kalyan bus stop I caught a bus going to Murbad (any bus going to the city). From Murbad bus stop I caught a bus going to Dehri village.
After reaching Dehri village I had some breakfast. And after that I started the wandering journey of the fort.
There are buses to Gorakhgad every 1 hour from 6 am to 6 pm. There are buses to go to and from the village from Kalyan to Murbad (city-going bus) and Murbad to Dehri (Gorakhgad will work). There are buses for the village, and for the return journey from Dehri to Murbad and Murbad to Kalyan.
On Gorakhgad, you can see many water tanks, many caves, Shri Gorakhnath Temple, Deramata Temple, Shivling, the main gate of the fort, and many other historical things. From what I heard, the journey took 11 to 12 hours
If you are coming here from Pune or outside Maharashtra to see Gorakhgad, there is a facility to stay in the village near the fort and have breakfast and dinner.

देहरी गावात पोहचल्या नंतर मी थोडा नाष्टा पाणी केला. व त्या नंतर गडच्या भटकंती प्रवास सुरुवात केली.

गोरखगड वरती आपल्याला वरती खुप साऱ्या पाण्याच्या टाके, खूप सारे गुफा , श्री गोरखंनाथ मंदिर , डेरामाता मंदिर, शिवलिग, गडाचा मुख्य दरवाजा , तसेच भरपूर असे ऐतिहासिक गोष्टी पाहायला मिळतात.माझा ऐकून प्रवास हा 11 ते 12 तासाचा झाला🙏
