It is strategically located in a spur\, fragmented from the Sahyadri mountains of Maharashtra. The fort was built by the Shilahar kings and the Nizam of Ahmednagar looked after the fort later on. Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj reconstructed and restored the fort. The fort was captured by Shankarji Narayan from the Siddhi of Janjira during the Rajaram regime.Bajirao Peshwa captured the Surgad fort in the year 1733. The Peshwas used this fort as a prison for the captured prisoners. \nAbout Avchitgad: Avchitgad is a fort located in the Sahyadri ranges of Maharashtra. The fort is situated near Roha in the Raigad district. At the base of this fort is a village called Medha. This fort is believed to be built by Shilahar kings and subsequently used by the Nizam of Ahmednagar. The great Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji is also believed to have reconstructed this fort. The work was carried out in a hurry and hence the name ‘Avchitgad’.
