Kothaligad was mainly used as a watch tower and an ammunition depot and was a geographically important fort in both Maratha and Mughal empire. As this fort is located on the verge of Konkan\, control over this fort meant control over the Konkan region below the fort.The primary attractions on this fort are the big and spacious rock carved caves\, water cisterns and the steps carved from inside a rock leading to the top of the Pinnacle. But WHY do they do it? \nMost spiders have eight eyes. In some species four of those eyes have a reflective layer behind their retinas\, called a tapetum. But WHAT makes them reflective?! \nWHAT birds can we see at night that aren’t active during the day? \nSeven Islands staff will answer these mysteries and many more during the Night Eyes series. During a 2.5 mile\, sunset to dark hike\, we will explore the wonders of the park after hours! \nThe cost of this program is $15.00 per person. We encourage participants to bring water\, sturdy hiking shoes\, and flashlights. Please meet park staff that will be the guides at the Bluebird Barn by the main entrance parking lot by 9:00pm. In treaty of Purandar\, Marathas lost the fort again. Shivaji Maharaj tried to conquer Mahuli\, but failed. A thousand Marathas were killed. Most of them were from nearby villages. Shivaji Raje said to his dead Kadam sardar he is our gold. So Raje gave “Sonare” surname to this family.In one such treaty Shivaji Raje made a truce in offering 22 forts. Of which 3 were the one mentioned above. DESCRIPTION:Firefly Kothaligad Night Trek | Mumbai Mountain Hikers \nFirefly\, every year before monsoon we celebrate firefly festival. End of May and start of June fire fly are started to visible. There some location in Maharshtra Firefly are spotted and huge amount of people use to go for Firefly. Fire Fly belong to the Lampyridae family of insects. They have soft body. The female fly attract to Male fly for matting that is why they produce light. \nKothligad is small Fort of Maharashtra. Kothaligad is also known as Peth. Kothaligad height is 3100ft. Kothaligad is situated in east of Karjat on the road of Karjat-Murbad. Kothaligad was use as a Lighthouse. From the Kothaligad the Direction was given about enemy. In fact we can say Kothaligad also use as watch tower to keep eye on Mawal area in the Kingdom of Maratha. There is a small temple and large cave at the base and a chimney like tunnel to the top of the fort. This pinnacle is carved from inside forming a staircase reaching the top. There is a tank of water (rock cut water cistern) at some distance from the cave and another one at the top of the fort. The stone is a single black expanse reaching till the Peth village standing on the fertile soil with abundant natural resources for water and farming. The cave and the temple carvings date back to the 13th century. Not much is known about the history until the 18th century. In 1684 Aurangjeb sent Abdul Kadir and AlaiBiradkar to capture this fort. After a small skirmish\, the fort was captured by Abdul Kadir. Aurangjeb honored Abdul Kadir and renamed this fort as Miftah-ul-Fateh (Key to success).
