SUMMARY:Bandhavgarh Wildlife Camp - 28 April 2023
DESCRIPTION:Bandhavgarh National Park is located in the Umaria district of Madhya Pradesh. Bandhavgarh\, with an area of 105 km2 and a buffer area of approximately 400 sq km of topography varies between steep ridges\, undulating\, forest and open meadows. \nThe word Bandhavgarh is a combination of two words: Bandhav + Garh where Bandhav means brother and Garh means Fort. So the meaning of Bandhavgarh is brother’s fort. The name Bandhavgarh given to the reserve is due to the presence of an ancient fort in the hillock of the Vindhya ranges of Umaria. It has been believed that Lord Rama gifted this amazing fort to his younger brother Lakshmana. The Bandhavgarh fort is scripted with many convincing evidences of human activities and architectural techniques and interestingly\, the legend explains that the ruined fort was being reconstructed by two monkeys who built a bridge between Lanka and the mainland. The fort also lets you explore several man made caves with inscriptions and rock paintings. \nThis park has a large biodiversity. The density of the tiger population at Bandhavgarh (8 Tiger per square km) is one of the highest known in India. The park has a large breeding population of leopards\, and various species of deer. Maharaja Martand Singh of Rewa captured the first white tiger in this region in 1951. This white tiger\, Mohan\, is now stuffed and on display in the palace of the Maharajas of Rewa. \nOver the years\, the park has shown a great number of increases in the count of the tiger species and this is the reason why tiger tours is so famed to attract large amount of tourists at its vicinity. There are more than 22 species of mammals and 250 species of birds. Common Langurs and Rhesus Macaque represent the primate group. Carnivores include the Asiatic Jackal\, Bengal Fox\, Sloth Bear\, Ratel\, Gray Mongoose\, Striped Hyena\, Jungle Cat\, Leopard and Tiger. The artiodactyls frequently sighted are Wild Pigs\, Spotted Deer\, Sambar\, Chausingha\, Nilgai\, Chinkara and Gaur. Mammals such as Dhole\, the small Indian Civet\, Palm Squirrel and Lesser Bandicoot Rat are seen occasionally. The Balpakram Baghmara Landscape of the South Garo Hills includes Balpakram National Park\, Siju Wildlife Sanctuary\, Baghmara Reserve Forest and community owned land which totals an area of 600 sq. km. The South Garo Hills is extremely rich in biodiversity\, offering tremendous opportunities to experience breathtaking flora and fauna. The landscape is extremely rich in butterfly diversity with an excess of 350 species\, which includes some of the rarest butterflies in the country. Some of the charismatic species of butterflies the Kohinoor\, Yellow Gorgon\, Western Jungle Queen\, and Marble Map are found here. Besides butterflies the landscape is also home to 85 mammal species including the Hoolock Gibbon\, Asian Elephant\, Stumped-tail Macaque\, Capped Langur\, Himalayan Black Bear\, and Clouded Leopard.
