Bhigwan, located around 100 km from Pune near the Ujani Dam backwaters on the Bhima River, is a premier bird-watching destination, often called the “Bharatpur of Maharashtra”. Famous for winter migratory birds—especially Greater Flamingos—the area is a massive wetland attracting over 230 bird species between December and March. 

Key Highlights of Bhigwan & Ujani Backwaters:

• Flamingo Hotspot: Shallow backwaters provide an ideal habitat for large flocks of flamingos, along with migratory painted storks, bar-headed geese, and northern shovelers.

• Best Time to Visit: December to March is prime time for spotting migratory birds.

• Boating/Birding Areas: Key locations for spotting include Kumbhargaon and Bhigwan town itself, where boat rides can be hired for close-up views and photography.

• Other Activities: Bird photography, sunrise/sunset watching over the backwaters, and night boat rides are popular.

• Species Diversity: Besides flamingos, visitors often see raptors like osprey and marsh harriers, along with various waders and storks. 

How to Reach:

• By Road: Around 100-120 km from Pune on the Pune-Solapur highway.

• By Train: Bhigwan has a railway station.
