Karnala Bird Sanctuary – In search of the Indian Pitta
Just before the monsoons hit our city, a very beautiful visitor can be seen in our area for a few days – the Indian Pitta, a passage migrant, very colourful and secretive bird. Let us take this opportunity to go on a Pitta ‘hunt’ at Karnala. The moist deciduous forest of Karnala Bird Sanctuary during this period is also home to resident birds like Asian Paradise-Flycatcher, Black-naped Monarch, Small Sunbird, Nilgiri Flowerpecker, Rufous and Heart-spotted Woodpecker, White-bellied, Greater Racquet-tailed and Bronzed Drongo, Crested Serpent-eagle, and Golden-fronted Leafbird.
Grade: Easy undulating walk of 2–3 km
Reporting: Bus will leave from Dadar T.T. (near Chandu Halwai) at 06:00 a.m., Chembur (near Diamond Garden) at 06:20 a.m., and Vashi (Vashi Jn) at 06:40 a.m.
The group will be back by noon.
Charges: Rs 1,500/- for BNHS members and Rs 1,700/- for others.
