About Harishchandragad:
Harishchandragad boasts a profound antiquity, with remnants of Microlithic civilization unearthed within its bounds. Revered in ancient scriptures like the Matsyapurana, Agnipurana, and Skandapurana, its genesis dates back to the 6th century during the Kalachuri dynasty’s reign, marked by the construction of its citadel. The intricate caves, likely hewn around the 11th century, enshrine statues of Lord Vishnu. Despite bearing names like Taramati and Rohidas, the cliffs hold no connection to Ayodhya.
In the 14th century, the eminent sage Changdev, renowned for composing the epic Tatvasaar, found solace in meditation here, alongside the creation of the caves. The fort and its environs exhibit a tapestry of diverse cultures through various constructions. Noteworthy are the carvings adorning Nageshwar temple in Khireshwar village, the Harishchandreshwar temple, and the Kedareshwar cave, indicating the fort’s medieval heritage. Associated with Mahadev, a totem of the Mahadev Koli tribe, who held sway over the fort preceding the Mughals, Harishchandragad later fell under Mughal dominion until its capture by the Marathas in 1747.
