Key Attractions

 

  • Wilson Dam and Arthur Lake: Built in 1910 across the Pravara River, the Wilson Dam is one of the oldest dams in the country. The dam’s construction created the picturesque Arthur Lake, a popular spot for boating and camping.
  • Umbrella Falls: During the monsoon season, when the Wilson Dam overflows, the water cascades over the rocks, creating a spectacular waterfall that resembles an umbrella.
  • Randha Falls: Located about 10 km from Bhandardara, this breathtaking waterfall is formed as the Pravara River plunges from a height of about 170 feet into a deep gorge.
  • Mount Kalsubai: For adventure seekers, Mount Kalsubai is a must-visit. At 5,400 feet, it is the highest peak in Maharashtra and a famous trekking destination, offering panoramic views of the Sahyadri range.
  • Ratangad Fort: This 400-year-old fort is a historical marvel and a popular trekking spot. It was once ruled by the Mughals and later conquered by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
  • Amruteshwar Temple: Located in the village of Ratanwadi, this ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is a significant attraction. It was built in the 9th century in the Hemadpanti architectural style and is known for its intricate carvings.
  • Fireflies Festival: In the pre-monsoon period (typically May and June), Bhandardara is known for its firefly festival, where thousands of fireflies create a magical twinkling display.
  • Sandhan Valley: Also known as the “Valley of Shadows,” this is a unique canyon with large cliffs and caves that is a popular destination for trekkers and adventurers.

 

Best Time to Visit

 

Bhandardara can be visited throughout the year, with each season offering a different experience:

  • Monsoon (June to September): This is arguably the best time to visit as the area becomes a lush green paradise with numerous waterfalls flowing in full force. The weather is cool and pleasant.
  • Winter (October to February): The weather is cool and pleasant, making it ideal for sightseeing, trekking, and camping. The skies are clear, offering great views.
  • Summer (March to May): While the days can be hot, the nights are cooler. This is an offseason, making it a good time for budget travelers. It’s also the perfect time to witness the firefly festival.
